sami mustafa: founder-principal
Sami Mustafa is the Founder-Principal of The C.A.S. School. He is also the Executive Director of the Bookgroup and Executive Director of the Sindh Education Reform Initiative (SERI). He has a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Master’s degree in Political Economy/Sociology from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He has more than 40 years of experience in the field of education.
Sami founded The C.A.S. School in 1981. With its modern approach, the school has come to be known for its innovative teaching practices. In 1990, he established the Bookgroup for publishing alternative textbooks in Urdu and local languages. Working with 18 other schools, he was the moving spirit in establishing the Aga Khan Examination Board which was notified in 2002.
With a commitment to modernizing public sector schools, Sami has been interfacing with the government since 1990 for reforming government schools, improving teaching practices, and introducing modern management systems. In 2014 he began working with the Sindh Government on the Sindh Education Reform Initiative (SERI). Starting with three schools in Khairpur (3,500 students), as a first step in developing the road map for change in government schools, SERI aims to address the culture of learning in public sector schools, in order to demonstrate that poor children, too, can receive state-of-the-art education free of cost.
In 1998 Sami was a member of the Experts Committee for National Education Policy 1998-2010 and of the National Committee on Education (NCE). In 2002 he was the coordinator of the Task Force on Human Development. He was also Member, Governing Board, and Member, Executive Committee of the Teachers Resource Centre (TRC), Karachi, from 1986 to 1988.
Sami is the author of 22 Urdu books written for young children.
He has 3 children, and 2 grandchildren.
